Statement
Regarding
Anti-Islamic Web Sites
on the Internet
For Immediate Release
Fullerton, CA—The Islam
Commentaries web site is on hiatus for the remainder of 2008.
In the years
following the events of 11 September 2001, a number of web sites
were published that several Islamic organizations characterized as anti-Islamic in
nature. We are pleased to note that The Islam Commentaries web site
has never been included in the category of anti-Islamic
websites, whether in nature, content, or intent. As a matter of historical fact,
The Islam Commentaries were published during 2002 from
offices owned and operated by Muslims, several of whom were appreciated on a deep level.
During its time of publication,
The Islam Commentaries web site served as an academic resource
web site to equip people to defend themselves against threats posed
from conservative, Wahhabi-type, radical Muslims who had targeted
the West. It ceased publication in early 2006, restarted publication
in July 2006, and ceased publication permanently on 11 September
2006, the fifth anniversary of the attack on the World Trade
Center's Twin Towers, the attack on the Pentagon, and what appears
to have been an attempted attack on either the White House or the US
Capitol building (it crashed short of the probable intended target). The Islam Commentaries web site
claimed First Amendment rights of freedom of speech as the basic
framework upon which the web site was crafted.
The Islam Commentaries
web site began about a year after the death in Afghanistan of Johnny
Micheal Spann, the husband of Shannon Spann. CIA intelligence
officer Spann was killed in late November 2001 as the first hostile
action casualty of Operation Enduring Freedom, America's
first military response to the September 11 attacks. Mr. Spann's wife Shannon
was then a long-time acquaintance of the publisher of The Islam
Commentaries. They met in early 1996 when she was the acting
president of Simon Greenleaf University, then located in Anaheim,
California—well before she joined CIA in mid-1999. Following the
events of 11 September 2001, it took about a year to research
thoroughly the teachings and intents of conservative Islam so that
The Islam Commentaries web site could be started. As most Americans know, the events
of 9-11 were carried out by 19 Muslims who held to the teachings of the Wahhabi sect of
Islam. Osama bin Laden, the Taliban, and Al-Qaeda are among the most
well-known members of this group of Muslims.
The Islam Commentaries
web pages never opposed those tolerant Muslims that characterize
much of modern Islam in America. The Islam Commentaries web
site never promoted or advocated personal violence against
individual Muslims who reject the belligerence that
attends the behavior and teachings of conservative, Wahhabi-type
Muslims.
Furthermore, The Islam
Commentaries web site warned
liberal, non-combatant Muslims that they themselves are a
target for attack by conservative, Wahhabi-type Muslims who deem
liberal American Muslims to be heretical apostates
worthy of death.
The Islam Commentaries
web site
advocated active opposition
against radical, Wahhabi-type Muslim organizations such as Al-Qaeda, their
leaders, and their disciples when and only when
they are involved in active acts of belligerency, war, or attacks on
the West.
The Islam
Commentaries web site advocated that the West in general recognize that the current struggles in
which our nation is engaged are not, strictly speaking, wars on
"terror" and against "terrorism". Instead, The Islam
Commentaries web site held that the struggle is against
conservative, Wahhabi-type, radical Islam and not
against generic "terrorism".
The Islam Commentaries
web site equipped people to refute—in the realm of academic
argument—the tenets of conservative, Wahhabi-type, radical Islam,
providing provided timely editorial observations in support
of this task.
The Islam Commentaries
web site
supported America's active acts against conservative, Wahhabi-type, radical Islam on a national
level, utilizing the war powers granted under the United States
Constitution, and not on a
personal level, except for acts of personal defensive response when
and if an individual, a friend, or his family is attacked on a
personal level.
The Islam Commentaries
advocated that the best and
highest form of warfare that should be waged
against conservative, Wahhabi-type, radical Islam is to enter into
dialogue with them, demonstrating by logical argument the fallacy of
their violent behavior.
The Islam Commentaries hopes that conservative,
Wahhabi-type Muslims can be persuaded to abandon their violent ways and live in peace with their global neighbors.
